From the beginning, Cornish has been remarkably resourceful in finding - and funding innovative ways to provide extraordinary, high-quality educational and cultural experiences for students, faculty, and the community. But if we are to ensure that the next generation of artists exists, we must take giant steps forward in two areas: campus facilities and endowment.
Cornish has been located on historic Capitol Hill since 1914. As the college grew, we purchased, built, or rented space. The result is a fragmented campus with no place to grow. Dancers don't have a place to change clothes. Painters don't have studios. Classrooms are uncomfortably crowded. We desperately need more space.
Therefore, the centerpiece of our capital campaign is the relocation and expansion of the college to the South Lake Union/Denny Triangle neighborhood of Seattle. We have purchased three buildings there, which will increase the space available for arts education and performance from 113,000 square feet to 168,000 square feet immediately. Additional planned acquisitions will bring the total campus space to 225,000 square feet.
Our new urban campus will provide state-of-the-art theater, studio, and gallery spaces; a vastly expanded library; and, not least of all, a positive, vibrant focus for that neighborhood.
Kerry Hall on Capitol Hill, the college's first building, will remain as the center of our community outreach and education programs.
This critical component of the campaign is the beginning of a significant and permanent source of funds with which we can attract the highest caliber students and faculty.
Cornish's admission standards are high; our students are among the most talented in the country. However, because we are funded almost entirely by tuition, our ability to grant scholarships is severely limited and we often lose promising students to other schools. A strong endowment fund will allow us to give deserving students the support they need to continue their education.
The faculty is our greatest asset. Aspiring artists from around the world want to study here because they know they'll learn their art and craft from successful, mature artists. If we are to continue to meet their expectations of excellence, we must offer competitive salaries and provide resources for ongoing professional development. Our students deserve no less than the finest teachers.
